For our ‘olelo, you have to check out a chant Vicky did that was created to help remember the names of the days of the month in Hawaiian. Each day has a name related to the moon phase.

A great Saturday once again for Na Kai ‘Ewalu. This was our opportunity to share ideas for Hawaiian style Christmas giving. Vickie shared many of her favorite new products and publications, including a new gathering place for Kamehameha Schools alumni, the Imua Lounge on Ke’eaumoku Street. ‘Imua’s grand opening is coming up so get in on the fun by checking their facebook page.

For our ‘olelo no’eau we looked at some Christian words of the season: Mele Kalikimaka, or Merry Christmas, and Aloha Kalikimaka, Also, for the new year, Hau’oli Makahiki Hou: Happy New Year!

Every Saturday is right on when we get to spend it together! Our guest today, Momi Cazimero, graphic artist, shared the inner conviction that led her to start the first female owned graphic design studio in Hawai’i, Graphic House. She’s made a teriffic contribution to the community while holding true to her Hawaiian values. We also welcomed Leimomi Khan, President of the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs, and Ann Borricelli, Communications and Community Relations with Kamehameha Schools, to share memories of Kaho’onei with us. Kaho’onei lives on through the work he loved so much!

Our ‘Olelo No’eau: Ka ha’awi a ka mea hale, koe koena’ole ma ku’ono. Giving as a house owner does, with nothing left hidden in the corners. This is said of a very generous person who gives freely of all he has. Kaho’onei was such a man, in service for his people. Click here to learn more.

Mahalo once again for your company today as we welcomed the tireless Keola Nakanishi in his capacity of coordinator for the Mana Maoli Collective, and local music scene star Wayne Enos of Natural Vibrations. The Mana Maoli Collective is a loose grouping of local music all stars who have been perfroming together in support of Hawaiian charter schools. Now they’ve been invited to perform at the Pasifika Festival in Aotearoa (New Zealand) in March 2010 and are launching fundraising concerts on all islands to help fund this trip. On this beautiful Saturday together we found solace in the music and in fond memories of our dear friend Wayne Kaho’onei Panoke. Mahalo to Na kai ‘Ewalu listeners who have made this show such rewarding work for us. Na Kai ‘Ewalu was originally Kaho’onei’s idea, developed in partnership wtih John Aeto. Actually Kaho’onei hoped to make Vicky the Oprah Winfrey of Hawai’i, and in this program, Vicky shared many memories of their exploits together.

Our ‘olelo no’eau for this day: Ua pau ua hala lakaou a koe no na pua. They are gone, there are none left to fill their shoes.

Another great Hawaiian Saturday morning! We welcomed Honolulu City Council Chair Todd Apo and Council member Conovan Delacruz to discuss their positions regarding how cultural and burial sites would be handled if they are found in the path of the Honolulu Rail Transit project. We also heard about the great work Inpeace Hawai’i is doing in the area of early childhood education from Keiki Steps Program Director Lisa Pakele and P-3 Keiki Steps to Kindergarten Program Director Kanoelehua Renaud. A parent of a Keiki Steps participant, Sam Kapoi, came by also to share his experiences, too. The great Hawaiian music helped lift our spirits as we looked into the subject of possible Hawaiian burials in the path of the Honolulu Rail project. Hinaleimoana Falemei of the O’ahu Island Burial Council and Kai Markell, Director of the Native Rights Hale at OHA described the situation unfolding as the City moves ahead with plans for heavy rail through the Kaka’ako area.

This was one of those great kick back Saturdays where Chanel, the artistic director, got a perfect musical groove going. Manu Kaiama, Director of the Kaulele Program, came by to introduce us to Richard Kupihea Romero who shared his experiences combining Hawaiian activism with art, specifically sculpture. He credited his teachers at UH Manoa, Fred Roster and Mamoru Sato, for helping to link his two passions. Congratulations, Kupihea on your Master of Fine Art in sculpture!
